*ACTIVITES FOR KIDS!
Wonder is such an amazing book, it will undoubtedly inspire KIDS
to want to DO SOMETHING to make a difference in the world! Here are some ideas for activities YOU KIDS can do on your own:
*PRINT THESE BOOKMARKS!
(And give them to thousands :) of people.)
*SIGN THE PLEDGE!
(More about that here.)
*GET EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD TO "CHOOSE KIND"!
(More about that here.)
*TELL YOUR OWN STORY!
From the website: "Share your experience as the bully, the bullied, or the bystander. Past or present, we want to hear from you! Join the conversation and 'CHOOSE KIND'. Posts will be anonymous."
*WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO!
(For the song that inspired the title.) Lyrics are here.
*READ ABOUT THE AUTHOR!
*CONNECT WITH THE AUTHOR!
(Via Tumblr and Twitter.)
*CONNECT WITH OTHER WONDER READERS!
(Via Twitter or Facebook.)
*READ LOTS OF READ-ALIKES!
*CREATE YOUR OWN VIDEO!
Using programs such as Garageband, iMovie, MuVee, Adobe, etc., kids can create their own BOOK TALK (like mine) or BOOK TRAILER (like this one) to post on Youtube, Schooltube, etc. Or use free online audio software - Audacity or free shareware video production/editing software here.

*Activities for teachers/librarians to use with kids!
Teachers and librarians REALLY NEED to take advantage of their students'/patrons' inevitable enthusiasm over Wonder! Many kids will want to have long discussions, get active in the "CHOOSE KIND" Movement, reach out to other kids, reach out to the author, read Read-alike titles and "CHOOSE KIND" all over the place! Here are some ideas on how to build on kids' enthusiasm over Auggie and his story:
*Get some great ideas from the Wonder Teacher Guide!
(Includes some great discussion questions and curricular tie-in ideas.)
*This is a great "Teaching Wonder" Guide focused on bullying written by Tracy Ludwig, child advocate.
*Begin a "CHOOSE KIND" campaign in your classroom, school or library! (More about that here.)
*CURRICULAR INTEGRATION:
*Use related INFORMATIONAL TEXT readings (or excerpts) with students to supplement Wonder.
Here is a link to "The Boy Behind the Mask" by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Tom
Hallman Jr.
*Use Ray Bradbury's short story "All Summers in a Day" to pair with Wonder.
Watch the related video (28 min.) as well.
*Use an assignment like sheet #1 and sheet #2 to encourage CREATIVE WRITING and ARTISTIC EXPRESSION after reading Wonder.
Students can write poetry, essays, journal entries, research papers or draw a depiction of what Auggie looks like in their imagination or an abstract representation of how Auggie felt on that first day of school.
*Use videos featuring children with craniofacial abnormalities like Auggie such as this one.
Discuss as a class what it might feel like to suffer from a physical deformity. Other videos from CCA can be found here.
*Display Read-Alikes in the classroom or library and encourage students to read them independently or in small groups.
Students could then booktalk the book they chose to their classroom or create a booktalk recording, book trailer video, perform a scene using a student-written skit, etc. They could create a book trailer using video slideshow programs like Animoto. Kids can create a website using Glogster to advertise the book they read to their classmates.
(Like this one I created inspired by Wonder....see below.)

*LIBRARY INTEGRATION:
*Put up bulletin board DISPLAYS in your classroom, hallways or library to advertise Wonder or display student "CHOOSE KIND" pledges! (See those shown below.)
*Get inspired by this librarian's Wonder Boot Camp activity!
This is a great way for kids to get to know each other, improve their LIBRARY SKILLS and express their ideas about bullying. (Her Animoto video is here.)
*Invite in a GUEST SPEAKER who has a craniofacial (or physical) deformity to talk to students about what life is like for them.
Students can write questions ahead of time to be approved by the teacher or librarian. Use the Children's Craniofacial Association as a resource.
*Assign students a RESEARCH PAPER on various topics related to Wonder.
They could be required to find their sources in print or online resources in the library, create a works cited page, use a minimum number or sources, use a periodical database, the card catalog, etc. Suggested topics could include: specific types of craniofacial abnormalities, other types of birth defects, bullying in schools, how to combat bullying, etc.
